Our project is set in the Dolomites, in my opinion the most beautiful mountains on earth! I was born and grew up here and have spent my whole life looking for a technique that would allow me to capture the majesty and grandeur of these rugged mountains in my photographs without resorting to the cliché of the ubiquitous, kitschy tourist postcards. A visit to the Alpine Museum in Munich paved the way for me. An original ambrotype by Vittorio Sella is on display there, made around 1870, a unique piece, silver on black cathedral glass, with incredible resolution and an almost three-dimensional effect. That’s what I was looking for… and after a good 8 years of intensive work, I can now say that I have mastered the process with all its thousands of pitfalls, and this eventually became a project, or rather a life’s work. With incredible effort, 90×70 cm / 30×35 inch direct positives are created here, so there is no negative… neither digital nor analogue that can be enlarged, duplicated or manipulated… a rarity in the world of photography! We use enormous, 3 meter large bellows cameras that capture the ultraviolet light that is invisible to humans. The result is enormous, shimmering black images made of silver with an incredible resolution and an impressive aesthetic, imagery and presence….. UNIQUE PIECES
