This project was inspired by Zhang Chengzhi’s novel River of the North. Moved by the power of his words, I set out to walk along the Yellow River, hoping to experience its vastness and strength, and to discover the roots of my own soul. I imagined the river as a fatherly presence: broad, enduring, and full of legend. Yet, as I travelled, that vision was overwhelmed by reality.
The river I had carried in my mind had faded; the myths that once surrounded it seemed to have disappeared, leaving me with a deep sense of pessimism. And yet, China’s history reminds me that decline is never the end. From its ancient matrix flows nourishment, resilience, and the creative power to renew life.
Though the moans of weakness echo along its banks, they are destined to be drowned out by voices of strength and joy. From this perspective, the Yellow River is not only a symbol of loss, but also of hope. Its enduring spirit suggests that, despite hardship, the future will remain bright.
